Level Design

I wanted to pull this post from the other 'SB: Marbles and Slides' iPad thread and house it here. It gives a little insight into the way the levels were designed in the game:

For all levels of 'Marbles and Slides', we started out by hand drawing each in a device-sized template. Some of the levels have so many scratches and re-draws on them it's hard to see what the level is actually supposed to be.

Here are two examples of levels that made it into the game and the original premise sketches that they were based on.

How did we get a level from that? I read chicken scratch fluently.

Everything in the level is represented in shorthand. Note that this level is missing the 'danger' sign in the final version. It wouldn't fit.

Looks great, what are the major differences between the 2 versions apart from the graphics?

The game 'boards' (the puzzles for each level) and the physics interactions between the elements in the game are tied very tightly to the size of the screen.

Every level had to be meticulously re-designed for each platform. Portals, cannons, bumpers, magnets, pinball flippers and the gaps that the marbles can fit through all had to be re-spaced and re-positioned.

The game was originally developed as an iPad game, all of the initial 'test' levels were built for iPad. We began production by designing the levels with the iPad screen proportion in mind. As development got rolling we created many of the levels for the iPhone and then re-designing them for iPad. It was a back and forth process.

Both versions have the same number of levels but, in most cases, the levels are composed differently. Some are actually completely different, but share the same 'theme'.

SpongeBob Marbles and Slides HD is now listed as an Apple 'New & Noteworthy' game!

We have an upate on the way! As we noted in the iPhone thread:

A fresh-scented game update is coming very soon! In the update we're adding a lot of things but the biggest is the addition of a new pack of levels.

Each free pack of levels is being treated like and individual 'episode' with it's own story, characters and a few other surprises. Here's a screen showing the 'dangerous' Flying Dutchman that will be in the first update.

We are going to regularly update both the iPad and the iPhone versions with new content, new packs of levels in themed 'episodes'!
