My game idea has been thought of :(

Hi,

I know this is probably common amongst developers in the App Store but the idea I had for control system on a skate board has already been thought of.

The game is called Touchgrind and allows the player to control the board with their fingers as if it was a toy:

They've done a really good job but I still want to try and make my version, even though the controls and style are very similar my game is more to do with avoiding obstacles.

What do you guys think I should do? I could email the devs and ask them but they might say no even though I dont think I'd be legally wrong and never intended to copy them.

I know this type of thing has happened before in the app store between doodle jump and mega jump , and fruit ninja and Veggie Samurai.

So what do you guys think? I really want to go for it but just dont want to be sued?

Thanks for your thoughts,

Well Doodle Jump and Fruit Ninja both came first and Mega Jump and Veggie Samuri despite coming later and stealing their ideas still arent as good as them.

From what I can tell, you can't get sued for stealing gaming ideas. That's why we see so many clones.

I wouldn't worry about legal repercussion, this game has been out for over a year & half if not two.

I had an Idea for a four wheel motor carriage...but someone stole my idea and made the automobile (car).

And there were dozens of flash games using similar mechanics before papi jump. Ditto for angry birds... It's not so much originality that counts as execution and marketing.

He he that's probably the point.

But I'd like add two things. The first is if you are going to design a game, once you setup the general idea search what have been done already with similar idea. For classical genre, become first a mid specialist of the games in the genre from a game design point of view. The idea is first to not repeat past mistakes, second to know and experiment what's good and what's less good.

Once you get a good knowledge of the genre or of past similar games, don't stick to use same design idea than used in previous games. If your game only reuse old ideas there's something wrong. Sometimes different mixes will be enough but if that doesn't generate a new gameplay it won't be good. So it's safer to bring in few ideas very new in the genre.

For sure there's zero link between those two points and a financial success of your future game, it's just about making your future game better, still good to take.

Also I'm sure those two points are totally obvious for many dev/designers of games but it's also obvious that it isn't for ton of games released in App Store, even from those who try make a good game and not only attempt to grab as much money than possible.

About 10 30-second ideas have been 'used' by someone else. Good thing the 30-second ones are .99 easy come easy go ideas.
