Kolstov's Stones brings together the old classic game of Stones (Tic-Tac-Toe, in the West) and the modern rules which do away with such nonsense as stalemates and boredom by redefining the old rules. Stalemates are IMPOSSIBLE. If you don't believe us then keep reading.

This is the real thing, the way Stones was meant to be played. This version allows the complete customisation of the AI down to opponent strategy, competency, and forfeiture times, not to mention match lengths and stone types. It's all here.

FEATURES

--Addictive
Easily the simplest game in the world and yet the most challenging, Kolstov's Stones is incredibly addictive. Now with the ability to set difficulty settings, even completely customise your opponent, you can ensure that you are always challenged.

--Fast-Paced Action
With Kolstov's law changes, and the introduction of the dynamic stone life feature, Stones has never been this fast. Can you step up to the challenge?

--Stalemates are Impossible
Unlike the common children's version of this classic game, Tic-Tac-Toe, Kolstov's revised laws never allow stalemates to occur. Ever. It's impossible. You either win or you're back to the farm.

--Updated Scoring Model
Years ahead of his time, Nikolai Kolstov introduced Multipliers to the world with the Stones device. Now it is possible to see his hard work in the palm of your hand and the revised rules also allow for the super multiplier for extra scoring opportunities. For those interested we have managed to faithfully reproduce the coloured incandescent bulbs used in the multiplier lamps that were previously thought impossible to manufacture.

--Faithful Reproduction
Every aspect of Kolstov's automated playing board and revised rules has been faithfully reproduced. With the help of our friends at Arden Digital Film Effects we have digitally scanned the original board and playing stones in extremely high detail so when you play Kolstov's Stones you are playing the real thing.

--Complete Instructions Included
We have included the complete instructions found on the product's website into the game itself so if you're stumped wondering what to do for some reason then everything is but a finger gesture away. But, then again, what in life isn't?

--Game Save/Resume
It's not always possible to set aside enough time to play full, best of 13, matches against a grand master so we support the ability to save your progress for later resumption. The same is also true if you are interrupted during a game by messages, calls, or an inquisitive boss - the next time you start up you can resume from your exact place.

--Kolstov's Lament
We are extremely fortunate to have met with famed Kolstov pianist, Fernando Macias-Jimenez, who graciously allowed us to reproduce his stunningly haunting Kolstov's Lament within the game. You will actually tear up before you've finished the second Options screen.

--Historical Facts
We've managed to license an excerpt of Alistair Kenmore's book, 'Nikolai Kolstov: A Life In Stone' which details the life of the eccentric genius behind these brilliant rules. It's all there and explains why you've never heard of the game that is taking the world by storm.

--Credits Screen!
It's true. You can see the names of the people responsible for this title from within the game itself. Show your friends and be the life of the party. It's your only chance. That's what your sister said, anyway.

STILL NOT CONVINCED?
Seriously, then why are you still reading? No one reads this far. Ever.

But, do yourself a favour and get it. There is no way you can get the feel of this radically updated old game without actually playing it and you'll forever wonder why the boring version ever persisted. We'll wait here while you flick through the screenshots then press the green button at the top.

StudioDevils's comments:
When is Tic-Tac-Toe not what it seems? That's easy: when it's Kolstov's Stones! Stones is what Tic-Tac-Toe was meant to be. The all new rules make it fast-paced, addictive, stunning to look at, and of course challenging.

Kolstov's Stones is genuinely fun to play, and addictive. It takes the old familiar game of your youth and brings it to the modern world in a visually breathtaking way. The entirely original steam punk design, and almost hidden intricate details, just mixes seamlessly with the colour and vibrancy of the dynamic effects during the game.

"Tic-Tac-Toe was never, ever this fun - I've played this game repeatedly over the last few days. The gameboard is dynamic and exciting, and there's also a lot of cool stuff to explore I love it!" - Multi Emmy Award winner, Josh Weinstein ("The Simpsons")

"It's no way near your standard Tic-Tac-Toe game" - Jared Hill, The Daily App Show

"This could bring to an end the traditional Tic-Tac-Toe. Kolstov's Stones is that good." - Jason Bertles

Hey, nice work. Looks sweet as. So how are the rules actually different to tic tac toe? I thought the rules there were pretty standard!

The Dynamic Stone Life mentioned in passing in the blurb means the playing pieces actually break and disappear after a short while thus freeing up the board to continue playing. That way the game can never end in a tie - it will continue until someone wins.

But a win isn't a single three-in-a-row sequence, you must be the first to get 7. Then there are multipliers added for getting consecutive sequences, super multipliers for getting double-line sequences, etc. It can get pretty trippy depending on the difficulty settings.

Thanks for your question.

I went on the dev's site and the well-documented but sadly, rather tragic life of Nikolai Kolstov, is both intriguing and fascinating to say the least. What the western world knows as the childrens' diversionary "Tic-Tac-Toe", "Stones" has a very rich history and once challenged Chess as one of world's top thinking board games. Kudos to the devs for reaching back into time and capturing its rich history and gamesmanship encased in technologically modern sensibilities and reintroducing the game to us in as close to its original state as possible. This purchase is a no-brainer. Thanks to the devs for a well-thought out, slickly-produced and polished game with ranges of difficulty and some pleasing eye-candy, all offered for a great price.

I'm willing to give this a go on Cole's recommendation. Post back my thoughts, though I've never reviewed anything before.
