Crystal Defenders from Square Enix (publisher of Final Fantasy games)

It seems like Square Enix is developing a game for the iPhone, which is set to be released in the Japanese app store by the end of the year. There's no word on a worldwide release, but it is destined to happen.

Is tower defense the next sudoku on the app store? Dissappointing. I want an RPG from them. Preferably not a port either.

You will also be able to use this app as a flashlight app (on the lighter screens). Unit converter app sold separately. Just kidding!

lol. We are waiting for an RPG or RTS from them - from which there are only one for each genre on the AppStore - and what do we get? Tower Defense. Oh, of course it will be cure because of the Final Fantasy setting and it will be polished, but that's not what we are waiting for. We have cute and polised Tower Defense games already. We do not have Final Fantasy.

I think this game will be a test for them. They invest not very much manpower and money and take a look at how good it will sell. Especially when you look at the iPhone sales in Japan, we all can hope, that they will put their games on the other stores as well.

If Square brings an original (and not pared down) RPG to the iPhone, sales of the iPhone in Japan will take off!

After Vay showed that RPGs could be done, Square-Enix has NO excuse for not putting a Final Fantasy RPG on the iPhone.

I was glad to see a few a tower defense games come to the app store (I never actually played them until they did ) but I'm starting to think this is going to be the new sudoku/lighter/flashlight/converter/match three app.

I hope not. So far, each new TD game has offered something new or better than it's predecessors. I hope they keep that pattern going, then it'll be a welcome trend.

Stop repeating this ridiculous meme. The iPhone is making a killing in Japan.

Sample quotes from the article:

“Gerhard Fasol, of telecoms consultancy Eurotechnology Japan, estimates [that Apple sold] between 75,000 and 125,000 units in July. At that rate, he thinks 2008 sales could total between 645,000 and 1 million.”

....If Apple actually sold 200,000 iPhones over the first two months, that would represent 2.4% of the Japanese smartphone market with sales of 50 million phones annually. The Journal reported that Nokia has less than 1% share in Japan, and that the market leader was Sharp, which still only had a 24% share.

[end quotes]

The "failure in Japan" thing is a complete myth.

I just hope it doesn't take 8 months to a year to come to the states. It seems everything by Squinex (the games, and movie) takes forever and a day to translate. Tower defense or not, this looks like it could be an awesome game. Anything I have ever played by square has never let me down. Except maybe FF 9
