So it is fairly friendly to disconnects, or starting an AI match and then going offline. It's not like some other games that will kick you out to the login screen the moment it gets disconnected. However, obviously during multiplayer battles there is an inactivity timeout so the other guy is not waiting forever, but it also automatically retries the connection if you lose it for a bit.
I'll confirm now that the next release will feature an offline mode to practice against the AI. This was always planned for, but it looks like there are a lot of requests for it so I'll give it higher priority.
