Looks nice but does it bring anything new to the genre

My main question is do monsters follow a pre-established path with spaces to place towers along it or are you free to place your towers anywhere and create the path with them?

Monster run in free path. ANd there is indicator to show you what is the shortest path. If you put the tower to block the path, a new path will generate.

Actually, monsters follow a fixed path. I've previewed the game for about the first half, all the levels were like that. Dunno if later levels are different. However, there are challenge maps which are more open and require mazing.

Anyway it's probably good that I didn't finish the game during the preview, now I can buy this and play it in full.

Personally, I don't mind if a TD game doesn't bring anything new, as long as it's polished and fun to play. I don't think we're going to be seeing tons of innovation in the TD genre as it's just not a very deep genre in the first place. But improve on the existing stuff and maybe combine the best elements from other TD games, and that's enough to satisfy me. Though, I'm a bit hesistant to go supporting Com2US on release day due to the whole "tower defense" trademark fiasco.

The best TD I've played is Sentinel 3. Any beta testers know how this matches up from your (albeit) limited experience with Lost Earth?

I had beta tested both S3 and TDLE. They are different.
If you tried the NEW (non-release) maps in S3, you will have love S3 more.

For me, I love S3 more. TDLE also very nice. I love TDLE will show the updated enemies path. The enemies IN/OUT point is much clear than S3.
