Default Latest blog re: gameplay & coding

Thanks for the latest blog article. Well I'm sure you'll recognize Peter Molyneaux's statement along the paraphrased lines of: "To make a great game/play you got to play-test-play-test ad nauseum! It's reeeally boring!"

Populous: Best thing about populous was the therapeutic land moulding - and watching the whole thing unfold and react and reform. And greedy gloating, watching your enemy's "hard work" become despoiled, lending a helping hand..

Topia: Impressive target to give each of the animals individuality... sounds like a tricky goal.

According to last blog: Good news is Gameplay is perhaps being worked on... but have not heard more and that could take any amount of time?

Last I read from Glenn Corpes on the iPad"3":

Still working on AI. Development was paused slightly by the fact that I made it over to the states for GDC which was cool, actually got to meet Josh finally.

Topia also works at full Retina res on iPad3. The 3D worked instantly but took a couple of hours to remove the blur in the UI. With 'high spec' shaders it just about manages to stay at 30 FPS.

More pics and videos soon, I have carnivores hunting down peaceful blue sheep creatures in a very horrible way right now.

Default Blog Update: Rethinking texture blending

Rethinking texture blending

Quote:
Most landscape graphic engines have to represent different types of landscape and the question of what happens when impassable rock meets flat ground comes up in a lot of them. For some games it's entirely an artist problem but for those of us making lives hard for ourselves by using procedural generation, we've tended to find ourselves blending from one texture to another across a simple fade. [...]

[...]I'd been intending to get Topia working like this and spent most of the last few days actually implementing it. Here's a screen grab from yesterday morning.

I honestly don't care too much about gameplay here - I'm more interested in the sandbox and freedom to sculpt worlds
