I read the pm and it made perfect sense to me. Just don't see why you can't put that in the public domain instead of "hiding" behind pm's.

If nothing else, it makes it look like your prices vary and are tied to the size of the company asking for a quote. (Rather like the blinds company I had round recently who wanted to charge me 4 grand for 8 small conservatory blinds, presumably because I had a semi flash car parked on the drive.)

It's a pretty common practice for companies to provide quotes to individuals, rather than publishing them. This occurs in various industries.

Their prices will vary depending on the specific requirements. And I guess posting prices online would create an opportunity for others to jump in with cheaper rates, which would be undesirable for the original service provider.

You can check their prices privately and then compare to others, so I don't see what the problem is. We should probably let me try to make some money, without casting them in a negative light, for doing something reasonably common, in my opinion.

As a counterpoint, I can't be arsed contacting loads of different people for quotes if they can't give ballpark figures to start with, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. I want to know beforehand if the service is roughly within budget.

Most musicians quote per finished minute for example, but I'm sure if you want a philharmonic recording they'd say it cost more and if you want a sid chip track it'd cost less.

Translators quote per word. Proof readers quote per word. Work for hire programmers quote per month.

We charge a fair bit for programming services as we only want it if it pays well, so our terms are £6000 ukp for top drawer guys and £4000 ukp for seniors. That wasn't so hard.

Exactly, so they're not helping themselves any but its making it harder for me to get the right firm at the right price by needing lots of emailing before I can get a number for the balance sheet.
