The citizens of Nicetown are sad. And cute. And whiny.

But they've taken uncharacteristic initiative and rolled their sadness up into a ball.

Oh God - oh You - employ your salty finger, employ the magic of physics - and liberate them from their tribulations.

Over a lush soundtrack, over deliciously-painted landscapes, roll the ball away from Nicetown, interrogate the Woeful, liberate the Zus, engage in a little light mail tampering... and roll.

Roll through Forest. Roll over Mountain.
Roll through Volcano and through Cave.
Roll through the Clouds, roll into Space.

And then?

Roll into Heaven. A Heaven... of sorts.

Hello friends, well-wishers, passers-by: I am Joshua McGrath; one-half of the development duo responsible for "Ball of Woe" - this little piece of e-gristle for the iPad.

The game itself is a (quite difficult) one-tap, physics based ball-rolling game with a fairly surreal, hopefully-funny storyline - slowly revealed through dialogue with characters and interaction with the world.

I'd love to hear your thoughts - maybe talk a little about some of the design choices and what-not.

I'm enjoying this immensely. It's one of those rare games that actually has substance... and an awesome sense of humour

I think you'll find plenty of people who will appreciate your particular (peculiar?) sense of humour

You've done something quite unique with this game, and you definitely deserve some attention for it.

Downloading now. I'll leave some feedback later.

Right well I've been playing it for half an hour'ish and I'm really liking the art style, the patch work look is done every well indeed. The controls work spot on too, I was totally expecting this to be a tilt game from the pictures but the tapping works great.

A few things that maybe you can clear up for me though.

1- why am I rolling this ball around? Did I miss the reason?
2- are the levels randomly generated each time? They look like they are.
3- is there an end or do you just keep going for a high score?
And lastly why is there no iap to remove the adverts? I'd gladly pay to remove ad's in any game I plan to play for more than five minutes.

Well overall it looks like a pretty cool game and I'll play some more tomorrow. Thanks to the devs for making a great game.

Oh man - I love numbered questions.

1) I don't want to spoil it - but the story is slowly leaked through talking to the Woeful (the brown guys who jump up from the platforms) and alluded to by the Zus at the start altar. (You're rolling their sadness away).

2) Yep - spot on. The levels are generated randomly - but the layers are pre-set (so say, there are 5 layers of grass followed by 5 layers of mountain and so on)

3) There is an ending - actually there's an ending per-ball (a different fraction of the story or overall idea comes out). It's about... 50 levels up - past the clouds, and into space.

4) That is a really good idea. We're actually submitting an update today to tweak the ads. I personally don't like having ads on it... it doesn't taste 100% nice - but I really like this idea. I'll put it in this evening before we submit our next update (which will also make Ball of Woe universal. Really should have done this to begin with)

Thanks a lot for the feedback! I fully understand why TouchArcade was recommended as a "you must make a thread" destination.

Nice the fact it's randomly generated, has a story and an ending gives me even more incentive to play on

And lol I'm rolling away their sadness that's a good enough reason for me

Argh made it all the way to height 28, I'm sitting at number 5 on the leader board
Seriously the more I play this the more I like it, there's something calm or releasing about it, reminds me of katamari a little, especially the crazy story bits.
It made me lol when the mayor said no the pandas can't kill the pigs even if it is for the greater good

One thing though I didn't realise that the lighting bolts that push your ball back were consumable IAP with no way to earn them in game? I used them all in my first couple of games while I was messing around,
I'm not fan of consumable IAP so it just makes me be more careful, but then again that's where I always fail, to succeed I find you have to be slow and take your time as every time I start rushing that's when I fail
Still loving it tho.

People need to start giving this a try, there's only 300ish people on the leader boards.
