Initial impressions are good. The theme is abstract and unique. Controls are responsive with a left/right semi-joystick in left corner (you have to swipe, not tap, to change directions) and 2 buttons for jump and fire in the right corner. The control positions are adjustable. You can pause the game to switch between weapons (slot 1, slot 2, or side arm). The chiptunes soundtrack is fun. There are three levels, each reasonably large, filled with wave based pixel nightmare creatures (slugs, flying moth things, etc). Enemy AI is varied (slugs pause then jump, flying moths zig, pixel humanoids walk straight). Initially the levels seem barren with few foes you have to hunt down (red flag indicator helps). Levels "wrap around" where you can walk off one edge and warp to the other side. Between rounds there is a 30 second cooldown with option to immediately move to next wave. Jumping around levels there are power-ups scattered around that you must purchase with in-game coins by taping a button that pops up when you stand by power-up/health. Many of the power-ups alter your gun with special perk or different firing style. Each level you start out with a new "randomly generated" gun; and you can unlock guns in the store via in-game cash. So far so good.
There is in-app purchase for additional coins but they are also earned through gameplay so IAP appears minor. Each enemy hit you get (not kill but hit) gives you about 2 coins. There's an exploit where if you manually close Nightmerica mid-game it reverts back to your pre-game coin count when you restart the app. The swipe to change directions will take some use getting use to; I'm more familiar with iOS platformers that use virtual buttons or directional pad. Game Center leaderboards (based on waves completed; current highest is 10) and 15 achievements. Edit: My apologizes \/ Last edited by undeadcow; 03-01-2013 at 05:18 AM.. |
