X-Men: Battle of the Atom (GREE)

Coming later this year for iOS and Android devices, the X-Men: Battle of the Atom card game acts as a time-traveling narrative tie-in with the upcoming Marvel Comics crossover story line of the same name launching in September. Battle of the Atom centers on the future X-Men going back to present day to force the original X-Men — who came forward in time from their early days to have a heart-to-heart with the not-very-heroic Cyclops — to go back home.

Battle of the Atom players can recruit teams of mutant heroes such as Wolverine, Iceman and Storm to battle villains like Magneto, Dark Phoenix and Apocalypse, plus future baddies comic fans haven't seen before.

Fans can collect character cards and upgrade abilities in the game, which will be updated with new events regularly, as well as play through memorable story arcs ever since the X-Men's first appearance in 1963.

"It's fairly comprehensive, but to provide the appropriate context we're going to start with some of the big stories that precede Battle of the Atom, that help us frame the conflict and give context on why there are X-Men on both sides of the fence," says TQ Jefferson, Marvel's vice president of games production.

"The idea of being able to span the entire history of the X-Men — and beyond — was tremendously appealing to us."

Additionally, Marvel and the game developer GREE have been actively working towards bringing games and comics closer together, and they've been mining five decades of mutant superheroes for a impressive list of characters.

"Expect to see every one of your favorites in the game," Jefferson says, "along with characters that will have you rushing to your Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe to identify."

I am a little sad to see freemium shovelware pushers GREE so closely aligned with Marvel comics and involved in such a potentially cool expansive X-men storyline game. It says "...Marvel and the game developer GREE have been actively working towards bringing games and comics closer together..." but I hope they're not working too hard together.

Marvel Comics was acquired by Disney a year or so ago so hopefully this is not also an omen of what is in store for the Star Wars franchise.

...there's a lego Marvel Comics game coming out soon, fingers crossed that comes to iOS.

The Battle of the Atom story arc seems fun...

Aw why does it have to be with muffuggin-Gree??????????

This is just going to be a stupid Gree signature card battle type of game, and a total waste of time (and money if you fall into this trap).
