Here are some arcade style sidescrolling iOS arcade brawlers for fans to X-men arcade or The Simpsons to consider:

Mutant Fridge Mayhem - Gumball
Zombieville USA 2
Lego Batman: DC Superheroes
Knight's Rush
Ghost Ninja Zombie Beatdown
Combo Crew

I didn't find X-men arcade iOS port to be that buggy but your mileage may vary. I think it's well worth $0.99 for fans. The biggest setback for me was the awkward translation of free unlimited continues without having to be limited to your allowance money.

Have you played any of Sega's old emulated games? They all play pretty much the same. I can't stand the ugly, barely functional controls. They were barely acceptable when those games were released and are pitiful by today's standards. Altered Beast is a great game though, if you can deal with the interface.
