Yeah, love chip music - brings back memories of hours of gaming. R-Type, Silkworm... and Wonderboy!! I think I have that one burnt into my synapses [edit: not to forget Hades Nebula and Giana sisters!) Also the 'demos' on the C64 were great. Today, IMO the sid chip sound would be a hard sell; on its own it is too 'low-fi'. Perhaps, if used within compositions, it could have a resurgence. I think Linkin Park goes for that lo-fi sound sometimes within their tracks.
Even though I didn't "grow up with", per se, games that had 8-bit music, I have always liked 8-bit sprites, and also 8-bit music. I think it's the simplicity and the precise melodies draw me in.
