Feel compelled to mention how compulsively addicted I am to A Song of Ice and Fire. I figure that could be obvious around here, but I really can't stress enough how spectacular these books are. Couple others...anything by Tom Robbins, but I strenuously recommend Jitterbug Perfume & Even Cowgirls Get The Blues.
The name "Pooh," rather surprisingly, came not from a bear but a swan. In the introduction to hen We Were Very Young, A. A. Milne referred to the swan in the poem "The Mirror": "Christopher Robin, who feeds this swan in the mornings, has given him the name of 'Pooh.' This is a very fine name for a swan, because, if you call him and he doesn't come (which is a thing swans are good at), then you can pretend that you were just saying 'Pooh!' to show him how little you wanted him." http://www.us.penguingroup.com/static/pages/yr/minisites/winniethepooh/history.html
We need a book like the MIB. No space opera just government agents using ballisitics against and encroaching alien menace.
I haven't read the book you mentioned, but the first thing I thought of are the Harry Harrison Deathworld series of books. Similarly, I highly recommend the series to anyone. Despite being published in 1960-s, the books are still quite stunning.
I love reading, I'm currently looking for a new book to read that has greek or roman or egyptian or norse mythology in it. The last one I read was American Gods by Neil Gaiman.
Just read Khaled Hosseini's Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns. Old books, but absolutely epic. Might have dropped a few tears near the end of A Thousand Splendid Suns. Anyone know any similar books? Realistic, semi-historical, moving, etc.
Yep, I loved those books. Khaled's got a new book that's gonna be released later this year, can't wait Similar books? Nothing comes to mind sorry
Last book I read was H. P. Lovecraft : The Complete fiction , I just wish I could write short horror masterpieces like him.
The Iliad and the Odyssey!!! "The complete world of Greek mythology" Just search on Amazon, there are all kinds For teen books in the Harry potter genre check out Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson series, Heroes of Olympus, and the Kane Chronicles. Or Michael Scott's Nicolas Flamel series.
I used to read a LOT when I was younger. Nowadays I don't read as much as I'd like to. A couple of personal favourites are Jurassic Park, Memoirs of an Invisible Man, Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, The Farseer Trilogy and Tawny Man Trilogy. I've read quite a lot Stephen King's novels, too. And Dan Brown. A couple of childhood favourites are Adventures of a Little Wooden Horse and Mrs Frisby and the rats of NIMH. I'm currently reading The Hunger Games Trilogy; it's really good. Looking forward to reading: Let The Right One In The Millenium Trilogy His Dark Materials Trilogy A Song of Ice and Fire series.
Me too. Loved those books (and the show). Also, Joe Abercrombie's books (First Law Trilogy and the following books). They're similar to Song of Ice and Fire in that the characters are very interesting and complex (and dark), and the plots are unpredictable. As with ASOIAF, you can't assume that main characters are not going to be killed. The scope of the world/plots isn't as big as ASOIAF though. Also, I'd say that the Abercrombie stuff is more action packed (bloody). I've enjoyed Robin Hobb's books too. Well developed, interesting characters and stories. Slower paced and very thoughtful. I really enjoy her writing.
