My vote for general goodness would be New Star Soccer and Super Stickman Golf 2. Platformers League of Evil and Swordigo. Twin stick shooters: Solomon's Keep. RTS: Autumn Dynasty. Tower Defense: Kingdom Rush.
I don't know about best paid, but i do know the best free game. I know fans of the movie will agree with me. Army of Darkness: Defence, is the best free game in my opinion, I'm sure you would agree too. (just lacks iPhone 5 widescreen support)

That's just your opinion as an over-exaggerating fanboy. I can name hundreds of free games better than that, but you arent worth it. Anyways the thread is obviously asking for paid games.
Wowzers, what a thread this is becoming. I like cave games the best generally cause I like hardcore shmups. Racing games are good too like Asphalt 8.
I love league of evil and league of evil 2. Really well done action 2D platformer ideal for the short gaming session.
Offensive towards whom? I think the thread (or at least most of the posts) is a slap to the face of indie devs who struggle to bring quality to the iOS. We have games like Ravensword, Aralon, Infinity project 2 etc. and a guy comes and says "Tiny Wings". Makes me feel bad to be a mobile gamer...
Offensive towards whom? People who have lost someone to cancer I'm sure don't find it funny. My best friends wife is fighting cancer at the moment so that 'joke' picture I find in very bad taste.

In addition, I'd add these: Any Cave game (as Connector already mentioned) Arc Squadron Polara The World Ends With You Rayman Jungle Run Ms. Splosion Man Liberation Maiden Dariusburst SP Just about any OrangePixel game The League of Evil games Penumbear Chaos Rings 1, 2 and Omega Infinity Blade 1/2 Danmaku Unlimited 2 Asphalt 7 Blood Roofs ....well, I don't know where to stop. As one who prefers paid vs freemium games, I know there's a ton of games I'm leaving out.

Yeah, having lost my mother to cancer and my brother to a form of cancer (Leukemia), it is in poor taste.
Tiny Wings is made by an indie dev, and much better suited to a touch platform than any of the other games you listed. It's an iOS classic that, while assisted the kickstarting of the onslaught of generic runners, remains a refreshing title that got everything right. You can't diss Tiny Wings. That aside, I sunk many more hours into Super Hexagon than I expected when I bought it. Same with Night Sky. I think Superbrothers: Sword&Sworcery is the best paid iOS game though. It really set a new standard for games as art. BADLAND is a close second, a perfect mix of flawless touch controls with thoughtful design and replayability, thanks to the awesome local multiplayer design.
