I like the idea of "Foulfolk" as something that humans might call a creature. Doesn't really work for an actual race/species name though.
Opinions wanted... Do you think that number/math puzzles have a place in traditional fantasy RPGs? Or are they out of place? I had a neat idea for a couple of puzzles, but I'm hesitating.
Well, as long as they're logical (i.e. not like Myst) I'd say, yeah, put 'em in! While we're at it, are you going to include traps on treasure chests that can be disarmed via a mini game of sorts? It could even be something as simple as what Wizardy 6-8 used.
Trap disarming, lock picking, etc - Yes. But no mini-games for them. These are based on dice rolls against your Rogue's abilities - very tabletop RPG type stuff.
While I'm here, I've got one more enemy for you guys to name. These guys are big brutes. Smarter than the "Grulumps" that we saw earlier, and obviously more powerful and dangerous. They are quite a solitary race, almost always encountered living alone unless during breeding periods. This fact has led to serious territory disputes since their "incarceration" within Coldfire Keep...
There are "virtual dice" )) that get rolled in the background for a lot of the decision making. So it's random, but only as random as something like a game of Dungeons & Dragons.
No, I quite dislike this. I like puzzles ok, and I like RPGs, but I don't like mixing them together. Aside from the thematic confusion, what is an easy puzzle for one person is almost impossible for another; when people are doing sudokus, they can choose different difficulty levels, but it's hard to do that when they are integrated into a RPG.
Do you mean that you don't think an RPG should have ANY type of puzzle, or just math/number puzzles specifically?
I'm not terribly fond of the type of puzzles where, say, you have to touch certain items in a certain order, given by clues. But it's thematic and certainly bothers me a lot less than, say, sticking a random sudoku in the middle of a quest.
