Well, here's one 2nd gen-er who's not too upset about it... I mean it kinda irks me but hey, technology is moving forward and leaving 2nd gens behind. I'm confident Apple will release a 5th gen iPod touch sometime soon with an A5 Chip.
Totally this. Trust me, Rockstar would much rather sell their game to potentially 250+ million people rather than roughly 10-12 million A5 device users.
Just to clear this up, PoP is also an open world game. I loved that game to death on gamecube and couldn't believe it was ported to run on an iPod. The game honestly doesn't have much loading screens (not that I can remember at least) aside from using time portals, and the load isn't that long considering it redoes all the textures and even most of the layout of the world. But still, GTA3 is definitely a larger open world even if you count the past and present as seperate areas in PoP. Back on topic.. ahem.. BOO!!
Boo at Apple. I believe what has been said that this requires dual core processing, you can't blame Rockstar. You can blame Apple for leaving the iPod Touch out in the cold, un-upgraded for a full year, and based on what I heard (don't remember where), it won't be upgraded any time soon.
Stop bitching about A5 only. It is AT LAUNCH, they may optimize it later for A4. I don't know if A4 will handle it, GTA3 is a pretty complete game, true console game. Apple did make a mistake by not upgrading the iPod touch to dual core, but there's nothing you can do about it anyway.
I think this is fantastic news and I'm really excited to play GTA 3 on my phone, at some point in the future. It's not enough to make me run out and upgrade my phone, but it's nice to know that when I finally do, games like this will be there waiting for me.
If they said that it may be coming to more devices past launch, I'd bet they are talking about other Android devices. There are more of them that have the power to run this stuff.

Sure, they have the polygon pushing power and could probably handle GTA3 in low res but you can imagine the reviews: 'not HD, one star'. To be honest, I'd have thought A4 devices might be borderline capable of running something looking like the PC version in lowest detail mode but maybe Rockstar are doing the right thing and aiming for making it look like the PS2 or XBox. There are also many ways of doing a port. There must be a lot of code and I suspect they are planning on replacing the low level graphics and leaving it at that. Not planning to put any time into optimising for very different graphics hardware. PS2 for example can only draw basic polygons with a single texture but is capable of covering the screen with 10+ translucent layers and still hitting a solid 30 FPS. An iPad1 is so underpowered that it can barely run at 30 with simple shaders and 2 translucent layers. Sure, it kicks PS2's ass in other ways but GTA3 doesn't work like that. I'm betting it's already running on devices and the press release says A5 because they know it chugs at 12FPS or something on A4. Who knows, A4 owners might get lucky after some good optimisation guys have spent some time on it but right now I respect the fact that they haven't included A4. ltcommander.data Well-Known Member Dec 1, 2009 232 0 0 #70 ltcommander.data, Oct 13, 2011 Last edited: Oct 13, 2011 A Pentium III CPU has out of order execution. As well the GTA III engine is actually very inefficient since it actually calculates objects that you can't see when hidden by another object wasting processing power. This wasn't corrected until the engine was overhauled for Vice City. I completely agree. I do think it'll be possible on the 800Mhz ARM Cortex A8 in the 4th gen devices with a lot of tweaking. They'll probably have to do it non-Retina though, which is better than nothing. Certainly, given the installed base of the iPhone 4 and the fact that it's still selling, Rockstar is highly motivated to make it work if possible. I never played something that is below 30FPS. Most run at 60FPS easily. I LOVE the speed of this thing. I doubt very much that 'most' run at 60, some do but I think the rest are just hitting the 30 they are limited to and never dropping a frame. ltcommander.data Well-Known Member Dec 1, 2009 232 0 0 #74 ltcommander.data, Oct 13, 2011 Given the large increase in raw power, existing games will see a performance improvement as is.
