I'm thinking of targeting iPad and maybe later the Mac App Store, rather than iPhone, so a bit longer than 1-5 minutes should be ok, I think. Maybe more like 15-20min. Good point though, this is important to decide beforehand. Any ideas about landscape/portrait? This is what I was trying to decide today. I personally feel a bit awkward playing games in landscape mode, but it seems landscape is the more conventional choice, for a strategy game at least.
depending on design why not offer both.. apple even suggest to support any orientation.. if your gui is flexible enough for that..
I don't think it would be worth the extra complexity. Also, I will have an illustrated story (don't worry, not by me ) with it, which would be difficult to do in both orientations.
This all sounds very interesting, but I'd bring on someone creative to give the game some more art and/or story. Which gets people's attention 'Angry Birds" or "Vertex Edge" Give it more personality and plot somehow, even if it is a casual game, and you'll do well...
Yesterday, I finally released a free introductory iPad version of the game that I had given up on when I started this thread, and it ended up doing a lot better than I hoped (top 15-25 free strategy games in the US and many countries in one day, with about 1000 downloads). With some changes the strategy elements in the game play ended up being a lot more enjoyable, too - for me, at least. It still needs more polish though, and I decided to work some more on OCTOPI, so any feedback would be great. Anyway, so here is my "ode to semi-ill-willed aggressive criticism", coupled with a "self-promotional bump". With an interactive tutorial and beautiful graphics, it is the perfect introduction to this series of action games for your brain. ** OCTOPI is a single player game that uniquely melts together turn-based and real time game play. You control a creature called 'octopi', that consists of several circles ('cells'). In order to 'move' the octopi, you add cells step by step, spawning new cells from the old ones by touch gestures. The spawned circles are connected to their parents, forming groups of cells. You start each level with one or more 'base cell's that never die and pump life into all other cells. Each non-base ('regular') cell has a life span of several turns. As these regular cells die of natural causes, the younger circles that spawned from them get disconnected from the base cell. This is deadly, unless if you can reconnect them to the base by spawning intermediary circles within three turns. Each circle that dies before its time in this way costs you one life. ****** FEATURES: - An interactive tutorial - A survival level that will have you playing over and over trying to beat. - A beautiful and clean interface. - Minimal amount of sound effects designed to only give cues about the game play, and let you enjoy your own music. - Game play. Unique, mind expanding, addicting game play designed for your touch screen. - Game Center leader board and one achievement ****** "The main game is unique and it’s unique because it works." "They really took a simple game like Snake (like the one on my old Nokia cellphone) and changed the concept." "I was taken aback by how interesting it is to branch off over and over again and then panic because a huge cluster is about to explode!" "I really liked this game. It was unique, it was executed very well, and despite the lacking of art, the game is fun." (From theAppsafari review of the iPhone version) ****** User reviews (for the iPhone version): "Simple, unique...... Time flies while playing this game!" "This game is great. Its simple to learn and impossible to master." "A very original experience, if you're looking for something to keep you interested and a change from other generic games on the appstore, get this."
