Screenshot of my first playable test about 3 weeks into development, and screenshots of the final product for "Deadlock: Online" which I released almost 2 weeks ago.

The entire process from start to finish took about 6 1/2 months.

This is how Bike Baron has evolved in the past year:

(Homer Simpson is just a funny test, he's not part of the game)

the progress on bike baron are cool.. and homer is way too thin.. but some hidden characters would be actualy nice..

    ---

as for monkey land.. how is this a before and after if the first ape is actualy a sprite in the game?

which could lead me to the question why you sticked to the uglier basic art when you had the chance to make it look like the right ape.. but i won't ask that question :D

It's a shame and we know that.

The after character design is used only for promote the game.

We could use the second version as a bases but all the sprites was made before the new version. We don't have the actual budget to redesign all the animated sprites in pixel art.

by the way, thanks for trying our game Mr. Ugly

This is a great topic! I love seeing the evolution that games take through their lifecycle.

Here is an image that shows the progress we've made on our game. The picture on the left had mostly placeholder art, while the one on the right is close to what the final product will be (we have already redone the pause button since this photo was taken).

Same! It's really neat to see the initial and final product side-by-side.

It's still gonna change a bit for the final version, you can see instantly your ranking compared to other players etc.
