Hey fellas, just to add, as Ive alluded to in a thread on general discusion (before I saw this one), this is the (heavily)updated version of an engine that produced classics such as Half-life, Counter-Strike and Day of defeat, Team Fortress, and many more. http://forums.toucharcade.com/showthread.php?t=63842&page=3
I thout those games were made on the Source engine by Valve? I thought this was an evolution of Id's engine.
No. Half-life 2, counter strike source, Day of defeat source are source engine games. Half-life and it's mods ran on a modified version of the quake engine called GoldSrc. Whilst that's not the engine that's been ported it's less powerful than the id tech 5 engine (which itself is an evolution of the quake engine) and the unreal 3 engine. So it throws up possibilities, whether or not we see any games from it depends on if Valve think they can make turn a tidy profit and if they are licenced to use the engine on a portable device. As Cormack states, the iPhone is capable of producing games somewhere between the quality of last gen (PS2, Xbox) and current gen home consoles, and PS2 and Dreamcast both had Half-life ports. There's also the issue of controls, can these games play well on a touch screen? And a dedicated server client, if somehow they could make it so you could set up a server on a mac or pc and connect to it with others on an iphone it throws up some interesting possibilities for iDevice gaming which could mean you have more players on the server at any one time, as long as the iPhone hardware is capable.
@ RyoHazuki Valve have shown some love recently for the Mac - by porting over both the source engine and steam. Having done that, much of the difficult work (such as supporting opengl) has been done. One would assume its just of question of whether they want to scale it onto iPhone and iPad - which as you say will depend on if they think they'll make a profit by doing so.
Yay!! Another FPS to add to my very small shooting folder. Hopefully this game is as good as N.O.V.A. and Archetype. The screens look awesome, too bad I don't have an iPhone 4...yet
Absolutely! Of course it's not just Valve that have a great back catalogue of FPS games if you look at some of the game that have run on the id Tech engine. According to wikipedia. id tech 3 American McGee's Alice (2000) Rogue Entertainment Call of Duty (2003) Infinity Ward Call of Duty: United Offensive (2004) Gray Matter Interactive Call of Duty Classic (2009) Infinity Ward Heavy Metal: F.A.K.K.² (2000) Ritual Entertainment James Bond 007: Agent Under Fire (2001) EA Redwood Shores (this was to be a PS2 and Windows version of the PlayStation and N64 game The World is Not Enough that was ultimately cancelled; it is based on the modified FAKK2 code base) James Bond 007: Everything or Nothing (2004) EA Redwood Shores Medal of Honor: Allied Assault (2002) 2015, Inc. It means all games using the engine would have to be published by Bethesda, which might put some developers off.
GMO! that looks too good to be true! and it can even run on an ancient iPhone? no way you're the man Carmack
WOW.... But its shown on an iphone 4 and i have a 3rd gen ipod. I wonder if it will with all its glory on my device.
1. The iPhone 4 isn't alot faster, espechially with 4 times the pixels 2. carmack also said it was running at 60 fps on the iPhone 4, so the iPhone 4 wasn't having any problems so I guess an iPod Touch 3.rd gen should run it at pretty much the same speed 3. carmack said it ran great on the original iPhone.
This year. But I'm pretty sure it's more of a "tech demo" than a game. The full game will come to the iPhone along with the console/PC game in 2011.
is this game going to have that good graphics as shown on VIDEO??? if yes then this will BE AMAZING but this is first time i hear about |RAGE game what type of game is that?
Looks so awesome, going to be fairly expensive though, probably more than Chaos Rings, but it'll be worth it.
That's a pretty impressive engine. I've never played Rage, but I will now have to check it out! Looking at their back catalogue, maybe there's hope yet for a James Bond game.. pleeease
