I like to give this thread a sneak peek of what's to come in the feature, so I'll spill the beans on what will be replacing the monthly reader's choice articles.

Starting in September, I'll be doing a series on the history of handheld RPGs, from its very origins to the modern day. This will obviously be beyond the scope of mobile gaming, but I think it's very relevant to any mobile RPG fan in the here and now. And in the end, perhaps we might put together an interesting collectible? We shall see!

I hope you all will like it!

I like it already. Especially since it's now so easy to play the old stuff on new hardware, thanks to virtual console, official remakes and rereleases, and emulation!

Sorry if this is posted in the wrong place but I've been meaning to get into RPGs on my iPad for a time now, which ones do you recommend I start with? (Prefer priced games and not free one)

If it helps, my favourite RPGs ever are:- Ultima IV and V, Daggerfall, The Black Crystal (guess you could call it an RPG), The Bards Tale 1-3, Might and Magic 2-4.

    Thank you for your help

I highly recommend The Quest and its expansions. It has a Daggerfall feel to it in my personal opinion. Avadon and Avernum are also my favorites as well. I'm not sure if you like JRPGs but if you do the Chaos Rings series would be a good choice.

I typed a longer post but I accidentally it, so here's the main points:

For Daggerfall feel, go with The Quest as Nekko recommended.

For Ultima 6/7 feel, go with Avernum. Avadon is good too but it's more linear.

For Ultima 3/4 feel, go with 9th Dawn or maybe Gurk 3.

    For Ultima 1/2 feel, Lowlander.

Sadly there aren't a lot of good turn-based dungeon crawlers along the lines of Bard's Tale or Might & Magic. The Bard's Tale trilogy is available in the Bard's Tale game on the App Store. One of the Japanese-developed Wizardry games is also available but it's not real strong in my opinion. As for fun RPGs that don't exactly fit any of the ones you listed, I'd recommend Legend of Grimrock, Questlord, Ravensword: Shadowlands, and Aralon: Sword And Sorcery (Edit: Sword And Shadow, lol. Blame it on tiredness.). You seem like you're more into Western RPGs but if you are into JRPGs too, let me know and I can open the floodgates a li'l.

Although slightly more modern than what you listed, Baldurs Gate I & II and Icewind Dale are some of my favs, but I'm an old AD&Der. These technically aren't turned based, but you can pause the action while assigning your chars moves, which I think is even better than turn based. Knights of the old republic is also fantastic. Dragon quest too. Shadow run and dragon fall also look excellent, but I haven't played em yet as they're collecting dust in my extensive backlog

Sorry but I can't seem to find The Quest, I've searched for it but nothing is showing.
I'm on the UK App Store.

Haha, yeah, that's my tired brain for you.

Oh, right, you'll have to search under iPhone apps. For what it's worth, the game plays fine on the iPad.

Have you fuys noticed that the Kingturn series got a pretty big update a few months ago? Only noticed today. The visuals look much better now, and the interface is improved. Still not good looking games, but they are now closer to Tactics Maiden.

Yeah, I briefly mentioned it in the Kingturn Reload article. Mangobile is really something! Such great games.

Indeed! Niebau is very commited to his games. Shame he is taking some time off SRPG's so he can get a little breathing room, finantially.

Gameplay wise I think Kingturn and specially Tactics Maiden can stand among the genre greatests. Too bad it's hold back by the low production values.

I was thinking about trying out Coldfire Keep. I checked the touch arcade review but I was curious if anyone has played it on here?
Ps I really enjoy your articles, Shaun.

Do you only do iOS and console RPGs?

I'd love to vote for either of my two favourite RPGs. The Bards Tale III: Thief of Fate and Ultima IV:Quest of the Avatar.
