Does Showdown being Steam only mean it isn't DRM free, or it is, but you have to acquire it through Steam? There are lots of indie games on Steam that can be copied/moved out of the folder and still work independently.

I remember when Steam first game out everybody was very much against the whole idea of it. Being online at all times just to play a game!? What if the servers go down? But 10+ years later it's awesome now. I only buy PC games off of it (ok with the exception of a few that aren't on there) and it's really the best gaming PLATFORM out there in my opinion. I own the Vita, Wii U and OUYA Xbox, and ps3 and 3DS and barely play any of those systems anymore. They aren't bad systems but with the exception of PS3 and their exclusives, almost all games are or eventually come out on the STEAM platform and like what the OUYA wanted to do, it's got some of the best independent games out there. Back in the game games used to be a pain to install and play because of driver issues, and taking a very long time to install over multiple CDs but Steam is a pretty seamless experience and 99.9 percent of the games on it install with no issues. I'm excited to see what the Steambox will be all about in the coming months.
I suspect The Showdown Effect from Humble Bundle uses Steamworks for it's primarily multiplayer gameplay so isn't available DRM free for that reason; I could be wrong. This probably also binds it to requiring Steam operate while playing. Guesstimating here. Thank you. Origin is truly painful, 6% download speeds I get from Steam, a download gets to 52% overnight and then decides it would rather be 13% later in the day. Horrible downloading system.
I'm still against that. Most of the Steam games I own (somewhere over 50 now, still primarily a console gamer) will work offline and are DRM-free. Games that require a connection because being online powers the gameplay like TF2 I'm fine with. Not so much the likes of Sim City though, that really should have been an offline deal.
So I got given a £15 steam wallet card as a gift , trouble is I have a really old and useless PC, is there anything that will run on my PC It has 512 mb ram and a 2.4 ghz processor. And an average graphics card I got 5 years ago. ( you can tell I don't game on my PC ) Was thinking of getting hero academy for the exclusive team. Will it run? Any other suggestions? Will post additional info later if needed.
I hope you mean 512 MB graphics RAM and not system RAM... 'cause that wouldn't really run anything. The system requirements for Hero Academy are four times that amount at 2GB.
it would still run old... I mean classic games though - and Steam is chock full of those. Thief 1 & 2, Deus Ex, System Shock 2, and plenty of other classic games in different genres are now available on Steam. I'm currently playing through Thief 2 for the first time in years on Expert - it is awesome. I am definitely excited for the Steambox - but I may just go ahead and build a high end PC for my living room and run Steam off of it anyways. I'm really interested to see if they will be able to get Linux support on every game they have for sale.

Batman Arkham City (Game of the Year Edition) is on sale US$7.00 on Steam. Includes various additional packs. Just grabbed the Mac version.
Anyone tried the Early Access versions of State of Decay, Starpoint Gemini 2 or Talisman Digital Edition? They're all a bit rough around the edges but shaping up be fairly solid releases, Talisman was what I expected but other two have impressed.
