Yes but it's OK to ripoff only if your famous (I'm really not talking about Gameloft)

You know, if every game was a 100% ripoff of Pong, we'd all still be playing PONG because we'd have nothing else to play.

If every game was a 99% ripoff of Pong, we'd now be playing Pong, but with really nice graphics I guess. Maybe Breakout would have been invented a couple of years ago, too.

All games are clearly derivatives of previous games, but not all games are 90%+ derivative lazy clones. Only some. It's wrong to lump both somewhat similar games and almost fully similar games in the same boat, so that you can defend the latter. It's also almost impossible not to lump them together because both are just called "a clone".

    they are clones and clones...

Mortal Kombat was mentioned as a clone of Street Figthter, Final Fight as a clone of Double Dragon

and after years, clones become "genre" or *famous game*-Like (ex: doom-like)

good clones are always better or with major new elements.
bad clones are copy/past game, with rip off elements and zero creativity

That's why I don't like the term "clone"
