Nice, I wanna make a planet up to the moment of the bigbang +it would be awesome if the planet was so full of species that you'd have to let them fight for territory
New Topia blog here with info about the new landscape painting tools. Video of these in action coming soon.
Educational benefits I, like others in this forum, am looking forward for this to become a fully fledged application. My angle is in relation to the educational benefits. It seems to me that some of the cool things that seem to relate to an imaginative world with 'real' interaction within this world. Teachers may use this sort of app to inspire imgaination with students. Also the same teachers can educate them in some of the things 'real' world things facing the creatures within e.g. pretators, typography, husbandry etc. Keep up the great work
This sim/world creation title looks so slick. I'm excited to see the variety in which life finds a way, all while terra forming the world as I wish it to be. Keep up the good work.
Try this. Wasn't rocket science to find. Just cut the original link to the glenncorpes.blogspot.com, And it's the first post down. Or just click here... http://glenncorpes.blogspot.com/2011/07/topia-landscape-finger-painting-and.html
I got a question, is there a limit to how high the mountains can be raised? If there is, can the inhabitants climb it?
Right now there isn't a limit but the animals can only climb hills of a certain steepness, how steep depends on the animal. The landscape modifying tools in the videos are kind of primitive compared to what we have even now. The final tools will be so much cooler All the animals now react to everything else in the world, predators cause herds to scatter, herds flow around trees and can even by controlled directly by the player. For the last few weeks We've been upgrading various underlying systems, optimising, saving memory, adding particle systems and a whole new UI. There is a little new info in my blog but a new video will explain things better. Progress may seem slow but this is because I'm an optimisation obsessed idiot. Topia is all about making sure that more shit is going on at the same time than in any other game. The blog link in my sig is now fixed. Thanks for pointing out it was broken!
Recent Work: Full zoom-out, new water and coast effects, particle effects, stuff like that... Working on: Forests with growing, dying trees, forest fires.
I am definitely looking forward to this one, very much my kind of game! Thanks for the eye candy while we wait.
from @GlennCorpes s twitter: Dusk Cove Zoomed Out (I reuploaded the pictures to tinypic, because including pictures from twitpic doesen't work verry well and they disappear after a short time)
Finally got it together to make a video. Mostly landscape moulding stuff: Subscribe to the TouchArcade YouTube channel
That latest video was amazing - even without a "game" Topia looks fun as a sandbox/toy application. Now I'm really wondering what the gameplay will be like. Watching in the video as the presenter carved a mountain range into two gave me an idea. I wonder if the creatures/animals "evolve" over time and if they could evolve differently if they were separated from the other animals. And if they could evolve a method of reaching the other parts of the world that they couldn't reach. Or, they can't reach the other area and you create a land bridge for them and just watch what happens. Anyway - not that I'm expecting any of that to happen - just a random thought I had while watching the video.
