World Turtle Day: Time to Celebrate, Raise Awareness About Shelled Reptiles

Happy #WorldTurtleDay, everyone! Nearly half of more than the 300 species of turtles are threatened with extinction - a plight equaled only by primates. Turtles and tortoises are threatened by the exotic food trade, habitat destruction, global warming and the pet trade. :(

The illegal pet trade is significantly harming turtles of all kinds, as demand for turtles in pet stores remains high and continues to exceed demand for turtle adoption. In the illegal pet trade, turtles and tortoises are removed from their natural habitat and transported long distances to be sold, often in unsafe conditions.

Naturally turtles are best known for their shells, which serve as a very effective defence against predators. However, various types of turtle have adapted in more unusual ways too. The pancake tortoise, for example, is gifted with a more ‘flexible’ and thin shell, allowing it to manoeuvre quickly into protective rock crevices rather than retreat into its own shell. The African helmeted turtle (aka Pelomedusa subrufa), meanwhile, uses a strong odour to repel predators.

While many turtles & tortoises are herbivores (or predominantly plant eating omnivores), many are also pretty powerful hunters. Although there are no known human deaths, it's best to avoid the bite of the alligator snapping turtle, one of the most infamous species of biting turtles. The 'snap' of the freshwater alligator snapping turtle can bite a human's fingers clean-off!

There are a number of ways you can help endangered and threatened turtles. Go here to find out: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/23/world-turtle-day-2013_n_3326107.html

    TurtleStrike Screenshots: New Environments

Heya! We have made a bunch of new environments you can use to your advantage during the match.

The first group - whale skeleton and arched island (the one with the hole in the middle) - can be used primary as a missile cover. But skilled player can sneak through a torpedo or two.

The other environment is torpedo net. In this case the cover is reversed; you can shoot over the net with your missile, but the net will stop any torpedo heading your way.

All the Turtles in the Ocean: Pirate Tribe

Here you can see the very first preview of the pirate turtle skin. How do you like it?

“And then there was famous Captain Hardbeak, once the richest turtle in all Seven Seas. Betrayed, marooned and doomed – he had only one vision in his mind; survive! Survive and get his treasure back. He gathered all the rag-tag raiding parties from every atoll, every bay, every island in the known Ocean and he united them under single flag. Into one huge pirate tribe. The story of Hardbeak’s success is the most inspiring story I’ve heard in my long life.”

All the Turtles in the Ocean: Dragon Turtle Tribe

“A dragon turtle was seen as a symbol for courage, determination, fertility, longevity, power and success. Mapmakers sometimes drew dragon turtles in unexplored areas. They were a myth, a legend. A drawing on the Dreamscape meaning: Here you can experience epic adventures and encounter the things no turtle has ever seen. And then we met them for the first time…”

TurtleStrike Story Time: Proud Greenclaw, The First Airborne Turtle

Greenclaw was a great scout and a great hunter. He was also the most curious and proud among the turtles of his tribe. And he loved to show off. When he came up with a better crab trap design and you just never heard the end of it! And on the morning of one fateful day, he overheard two pirate scouts say that they were planning to catch turtle hatchlings the very next day. Greeclaw was surrounded, but then he got a brilliant idea! He asked two cranes to help him escape and warn the tribe.

All the Turtles in the Ocean: Zombie Tribe

“MTF virus! Mutated Turtle Flu! You never heard of it? Believe me, it is coming. They are coming! No one can stop them, no one can kill them! I have seen them – the rotten turtle faces, the empty soulless eyes watching you without a single blink. Oh save our souls, Almighty Hatchery Watcher, the end is night!”

TurtleStrike Story Time: Tale of Two Brothers

A moment of great grief. The Golden Bay is conquered by the united Pirate Tribes. Only a few days remain before the Great Squid Hunt begins and all able turtle tribesmen venture far away from the village, deep into the hunting grounds. This is the time when only a few old warriors guard the village and the hatchlings. Captured and helpless in a big bamboo cage, along with Grand Hatchery Watcher Goldbeak, they await their new cruel fate. Perhaps to be sold on the slave market, or given as payment to the ever hungry Crabs? The hatchlings shiver with fear, but then old Goldbeak begins telling another story, like every other evening. She acts as if the raid never happened, like the pirates sacking her village don’t deserve her attention at all.

All the Turtles in the Ocean: Reaper Tribe

“The concept of death as a sentient entity has existed in many turtle tribes since the beginning of known history. For example the Reaper Tribe believes they are the Chosen Ones in the favor of Death itself. They believe that Death takes the form of the last turtle that died within the tribe, so a special caste of Hatchery Seers ritually scars the whole brood with the image of this grim deity.”
