Ah man.. I really love the gameplay, but the Freemuim is starting to be a problem. If only this had been premium... No timers or any of that crap.
They flag the apps as requiring a digital compass and so you can't install them on a 5G touch even though the iPhone mini, iPhone 4S, iPad 2, and 5G touch are all sporting the same relevant hardware under the hood. This has become publishers way of avoiding "chargebacks" from 4G and below touch owners getting refunds when, surprise surprise, your retina screened device with 256MB of RAM can't handle pretty much anything. Since Apple hasn't bothered to allow developers to set compatibility based on device models, they can either allow all touches to buy and install the app even if it won't run, or no touch. Good publishers rely on the intelligence of their consumers and put actual compatibility reqs in the app description. Lazy publishers assume their customer base are morons and do this. 2K was the first big publisher I saw doing it, and now Chillingo. Pretty amazed 2K allowed XCOM to run on the iPod touch 5G, it's the first new game from them in a while that did. You can use something like iFunBox to force an install, but if you still sync with iTunes for any reason, it will remove it every time you sync. iOS 7 can't get here soon enough because pretty sure the 4G touch and below will be excluded, and that will give publishers a better way to exclude inadequate hardware.
I totally agree with you on that one. If you end up missing a move or get blocked, all it takes is for one enemy to back away for a second to screw you over on time. You pretty much have to have an almost perfect match to make it through the time given. Unless you have a gun.
The game itself is pretty fun, but you can't really practice and get good at it because you only have like 5 tries before you have to wait 5 minutes, and that only lets you play one more time before you have to wait another 5 minutes and so on, unless you wait 25 minutes (or pay) to replenish your stamina. In a strategy game, the time limit to play again usually isnt that annoying, because the gameplay itself usually lasts alot longer and by the time you HAVE to wait (or pay), you are ready for a break from that game. But in this game, the individual levels are over so fast that you are stuck at the (pay or wait) window far too often for it to feel like you are accomplishing anything meaningful in the game. Gameplay wise, it's pretty good for the most part. Tapping to attack and swiping to kick is pretty straight forward, but the more advanced moves that take multiple swipes in different directions in quick succession can be a pain to pull off, and the pay window mentioned above ensures that you won't really get to practice them all that much.
And then customers don't bother reading anything in the description because WHOO FIGHTBACK IS OUT WHOO WHOO hey, why won't this work on my iTouch 3GS? YOU SUCK CHILLINGO, AND NINJAFAILTHEORY, THAT DMC GAME SUCKS TOO I HOPE YOU DIE etc., etc. Customers are morons, for the most part. I hate being barred from downloading apps I could plainly run, but I blame Apple, not the publishers or developers.
Hmmm... It's freemium... has horrible wait timers, plenty of IAP, tons of grinding, and has limited itself to a small market of hardware options. I don't think it's a wise investment of my limited game time. Especially with the mountain of full amazing games I bought and are in my backlog. This will be easy to pass on when/if it ever makes it out of the Canada soft launch.
The real tragedy is that they have a potentially great game hidden under all the greedy freemium garbage. Using your guns in a fight is pure cinematic joy, and the fighting itself is very fun and unique, for the most part. I would gladly pay $5 or so to be able to play any level I wanted at any time, even if getting in game money was a relatively slow grind, because the core gameplay is that fun.
Nope, 100% on the devs and publishers even if Apple hasn't provided the infrastructure necessary to do a model by model blessing. Should Apple do that? Absolutely. Them not doing it is lazy and hardly commendable. On the other hand, that is still no excuse for excluding capable hardware because you're afraid of bad reviews, that is pure cowardice and worthy of nothing but contempt. Why should I or anyone excuse a dev/pub who's too much of a pussy to have a few bad reviews? The best games out there still have oodles of 1 star reviews from fools who have 5 bytes of free space giving 1 star to the game because they can't install it. 1 star reviews from idiots is just part of doing business. Simply put, your app is either good enough to drown the 1 stars out with good reviews or it's not. Moves like blocking all touches tells me the publisher assumes it's not. Besides, it's not like there still aren't oodles of 1 star reviews on these apps from touch owners who buy/download them on their computer and then find out they can't install it.
Your choice of words tells me it'd probably be fruitless arguing the point - pussy? Really? - but let's just leave it by saying I think "If you'd just make good games, they'd sell" is one of the stupidest arguments the internet's ever come up with. It helps, but it is not and never has been a guarantee - what sells is not automatically good, and what doesn't sell is not automatically terrible. Anyway, way too off-topic now.
I wanna play this on my iPod Touch. If there are wait timers then maybe I'm not missing anything after all.
And after many many months due to Pocket Gamer http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/r/iPad/Fightback/news.asp?c=56088 is coming out worldwide. Don't know why took it so much. Is one of the biggest soft launches on the store.
Fightback looks great. Hopefully any bugs have been ironed out since it took so long and that IAPs have been slightly adjusted or are at least fair. It looks like Streets of Rage for the Genesis except that there are 100 floors rather than 8 or 9 levels where you couldn't continue. This and Cut the Rope 2 are my only definite downloads tomorrow/Thurs...
