Akalabeth, World of Doom - was developed in 1978 by Richard Garriott, creator of the famous Ultima series. It marks the beginning of computer role playing games, and is one of the first programs featuring 3D graphics on a home computer. This app is an accurate replica of that genre defining classic, bringing the feeling of a true legend to your iPhone or iPod Touch. You can't get more retro than this!

Does this take any inspiration from Tolkien? Those that have read the Silmarillion will know what I'm talking about.

Yes, I guess there was inspiration from LoTR - the Balrog in particular. I can't speak for the creator though!

Tolkien was my first thought also. The Akallabeth is one of the books in the
Silmarillion and tells about the downfall of the human island of Numenor, which is significant to the Lord of the Rings and the lineage of the men of the west.
(This is by far my geekiest post...)
